What is Import Export code(IEC)

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. It is mandatory for any business or individual involved in the import or export of goods and services.

Without an IEC, you cannot legally carry out import or export activities in India. It also helps businesses avail benefits from schemes provided by the government for exporters.

Advantages of IEC for Import Export Businesses

Obtaining an Import Export Code (IEC) is essential for businesses that want to expand into global markets. It not only acts as a license for carrying out import and export activities but also provides several advantages:

Legal Authorization

IEC is a mandatory requirement for businesses or individuals engaged in import or export. Without it, customs clearance and international trade transactions cannot be processed.

Global Market Access

With IEC, businesses can sell their products or services internationally, opening doors to new customers and global opportunities.

No Renewal Requirement

Once issued, IEC is valid for a lifetime. There is no need for annual renewal, reducing compliance hassles.

Government Benefits and Incentives

Businesses with IEC can avail themselves of various export incentives, subsidies, and benefits offered under government schemes to promote international trade.

Smooth Processing of Payments

IEC facilitates hassle-free processing of payments in foreign currency through authorized banks, ensuring seamless international transactions.

Improves Business Credibility

Having an IEC enhances a company’s credibility in the eyes of international clients, suppliers, and financial institutions.
