What is Import Export code(IEC)
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. It is mandatory for any business or individual involved in the import or export of goods and services.

Who Needs an Import Export Code (IEC)?
An Import Export Code (IEC) is mandatory for any business or individual engaged in international trade. The following entities must obtain an IEC:
- Importers – Businesses or individuals importing goods or services into India.
- Exporters – Businesses or individuals exporting goods or services from India.
- Companies, LLPs, and Firms – Registered entities involved in import-export activities.
- Sole Proprietors – Even individual proprietors conducting import or export require an IEC.

Note: Without an IEC, customs will not clear imported or exported shipments, and international payments cannot be processed.

Typically, the Import Export Code (IEC) or license can be issued within a single day. However, in some cases, it may take a little longer depending on the DGFT’s final approval. Generally, the entire process takes about 1 to 5 working days to receive the IEC registration certificate.
Yes. Every IEC holder must update and validate their IEC details online once a year between April and June, even if no changes are required. Failure to do so will result in deactivation of the IEC, making import or export activities impossible.
Since trade cannot be carried out without a valid IEC, the penalty may involve paying the applicable duty based on the quantity and value of the goods.
